THE ARTIST’S STUDIO - DAVID BENJAMIN SHERRY (2014)
David Benjamin Sherry journeys to Joshua Tree National Park, California, to breathe new life into the art historical tradition of landscape photography. Like Ansel Adams and Edward Weston before him, Sherry—a recent transplant to Southern California—hikes into the wilderness carrying a large-format camera, an analog device that captures the landscape in painstaking detail. Yet unlike the naturalists, Sherry sees the rock formations and dramatic vistas through a lens of humanity, perhaps as symbols of what scientists refer to as the anthropocene, or geological age of man. Printed in bright, sensational color, his photographs—part of a series titled Climate Vortex Sutra—are "magical and alchemical," a depiction of the natural world yet unseen.

URS FISCHER - YES (2013)
For "YES", 2013, artist Urs Fischer invited one thousand five hundred Southern California residents to fill the space of The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA with clay sculptures of their own creation, turning process into product, and artist into collaborator. The aim was to bring together a multitude of individual styles; no previous knowledge of working with clay was necessary, just an interest in working in three dimensions.
